#043 Locking/Unlocking a door

Have you ever encountered situations where you want to lock or unlock a door, but got confused about turning the key clockwise or anti-clockwise?

And that is when you try your luck, try turning clockwise... you heard a sound *CLICK*, but the door won't open. "damn it, I double locked it..." After realising your silly mistake, you quickly turn anticlockwise to double unlock the door. But after the *CLICK* sound, you manage to open the door before hearing the second *CLICK*.
At this moment, some people may just enter the room and forget about all this door issue, and someday this stupid mistake will come and haunt him/her again.
Whereas some people will quickly realise that the door was not lock in the first place, and for the past 30 seconds he/she had totally wasted his/her precious time to lock and unlock the door before entering.

Well, I have a solution to solve this problem! Just memorise the direction to unlock every single door that you have ever encountered.
Okay, this is too difficult for most people and the problem will still occur when one encounters a door for the first time.

Another possible solution.
When you want to enter a door:
First, try opening it. Sometime it is not locked and this problem will not happen at all.
If it is proven to be locked, this is where my theorem comes in.
"Turning the key in clockwise direction unlocks the door if and only if the door knob/handle is on the left of the door."
Of course, there are several other version of this theorem, like
"Turning the key in anti-clockwise direction unlocks the door if and only if the door knob/handle is on the right of the door." Or,
"Turning the key in anti-clockwise direction locks the door if and only if the door knob/handle is on the left of the door." etc...

The proof is rather complicated and it is omitted in this blog.

If memorising this theorem is still too troublesome, I have a corollary which will make life much easier.
But first, one must know that the 'lock thing' which locks the door to the door frame is extended out from the door. So to unlock a door, what you need to do is to make this metal 'lock thing' retract back into the door.
When you insert the key, assuming that the original position is vertical (if it is horizontal, simply turn clockwise or anti-clockwise to position it vertical), take the top of the key to be the 'mark'.
The corollary is "the 'lock thing' will move in the same direction as the 'mark'." e.g. If you want the 'lock thing' to move left, move the 'mark' to the left, which is turning the key in the anti-clockwise direction.
Some may feel a little confused about what I am trying to say, but just give some time to think and picture about the direction to turn the key, one will see that this corollary is exactly talking about the same thing as the theorem.

I personally use this corollary rather than the theorem because it avoids all the terms clockwise/anti-clockwise, lock/unlock or left/right of the door. Which causes fatal mistake when just one term is memorised wrongly. With this corollary, one will easily apply it to locking/unlocking a door with door knob on the left/right.

This may not be an earthshaking finding or theorem that will benefit the economic or whatever. But with this small knowledge, thousands and thousands of people can each save a few seconds every time they unlock/lock for the rest of their lives.

Before I conclude this post, let me restate the corollary once again.
"The 'lock thing' will move in the same direction as the 'mark'."

Thank you and hope everyone enjoy unlocking/locking a door next time.

#039 Twice upon a tea time

The goose that laid the golden eggs (prologue)
Mary was a hen which lay golden eggs, she was kidnapped by Jack and locked up in a tiny cage for months.
One day, a kind little fairy flew by and saw Mary. Feeling sympathy for Mary, the fairy aided her to escape from Jack.
To prevent Jack from finding her again, the fairy transformed Mary into a goose, as Mary always wished to know how to swim.
Thus, Mary the hen became a goose, which lived on a lake near a cottage.

The End.
P.S. for those who got confused, read the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk' followed by 'The goose that laid the golden eggs'.

Three little pigs (tragic incident)
Recalled that near the ending of the story, the pig(s) boiled a pot of water and awaited for the wolf to climb through the chimney.
The story (true incident) actually occurred during a Christmas eve night, and the wolf was not the first one to climb through the chimney that night.
Since then, Santa Claus became a myth and parents had to cover for Santa Claus's job during Christmas.

The End.

Three men and the cornfield (Adapted from my JC-GSC teacher)
Three good friends of different characteristics came across a cornfield, the corn stalks were tall that were over their heads. One of them wants to make a wager, to see who can pluck the tallest corn stalk.
The condition is to walk across the cornfield in a straight line and pluck only corn stalk. Once plucked, there will be no changing of mind.
All three of them went in together, when they came out from the other side, each of them is holding one corn stalk.
Each of them takes turn to describe how and why he picks that stalk.

The one with the shortest explained, “Even before I first entered the cornfield, from a distance I saw this corn stalk standing out from the rest. Therefore, I rushed towards it and pluck it. However, as I continued walking out of the cornfield, I saw many more stalks that are much taller. I am really regretted that I make such a hasty decision.”

The one with the slightly taller stalk said, “Whenever I saw one that is relatively tall, I thought that maybe there is another taller stalk further down. Hence, I kept proceeding without plucking any stalk. Until when I could see the end of the cornfield and I still have not plucked any stalk, I panicked. But there is no turning back, so I could only grab this stalk that is the tallest among those stalks in front of me. I should not have been so greedy, hoping to get the tallest.”

The third friend was holding a stalk that is significantly taller the other two stalks. Both of them congratulated him and asked how he was able to find the tallest stalk from the path of cornfield that he took.

The one with the tallest stalk shook his head and explained, “I did not pick the tallest stalk that was in my path. After I entered the cornfield, I observed the tall stalks that are around me. After passing a handful of them, I had a rough idea of the average height of those tall stalks. When I saw this stalk that is relatively higher than my estimated average height, I chose this. Although subsequently I saw stalks that are even taller than this stalk which I plucked, I had no regrets. Even though it is not the best, I know that I still made a good decision.”

The End

#038 Once upon a tea time

The Ugly Duckling (short version)
Once upon a time, there is a little ugly duckling.
One day, it grew up to become a beautiful swan.

The End.

The Tortoise and the Hare (the rematch)
The hare learned his lesson from the race and decided to challenge the tortoise again to vengeance for his lost.
The tortoise is willing to accept the challenge on the request that he gets to choose the route for the race, the hare accepted.
In the end, the tortoise won the race again. And the hare is still stuck at the river bank.

The End.
P.S. if you happen to see a rabbit by a river, let it knows that the race is over.

The Emperor's New Clothes (emperor's diary)
What happened 5 years ago had proven that my people seriously needed to be educated.
It had been 4 years since I implemented the 3 education enhancement policies:
1) Spending one-third of my country’s resources on education.
2) Compulsory education for children primary school age (age 7).
3) Half-yearly countrywide Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test, adults (age 18) scoring below 200 (the minimum requirement to see THAT clothing) will have to attend 20 secessions of remedial classes.

I am glad to see that the result of the IQ test increases exponentially.
For the past 2 years, the average score for the adults is around 208.
It is all thanks to my adviser, who suggested that giving them the same questions will improve their IQ more efficiently and quickly.

Even though I long wished to put on THAT clothing again to show my people, my adviser always strongly disagree, explaining that young kids have yet to achieve the IQ of 200.

What he said is quite true; therefore I never wore THAT clothing since then. Besides, I could not find it since I took it off 4 years ago.

The End.

#037 live to love or love to live? part 1

From the title sounds like its going to be a profound blog. not really actually, i just randomly come up with that name.

I wanted to write this blog for quite some time but I don’t have the mood to start writing. Now since that I have some free time, I better get my hand working. If not this blog will start to grow spider web….

I have a couple of things to touch on – having or not having boy/girlfriend, boy/girlfriendS or future husband/wife, love or sex, what’s after marriage. Well, not sure if I have the mood tonight to say so much, maybe I just talk about first one and leave the rest for future blogging.

Having or not having boy/girlfriend?
To save trouble, I just use the term girlfriend.

What is girlfriend?
A female friend which would hold your hand even while not playing games?
A female friend who doesn’t mind you boosting around that she is yours?
A female friend who you can wrap your arms around without her screaming?

Do you like her or love her? Or she is for you to tell your other guy friends that “Hey, I have a (this) girlfriend, just like you (pointing at those with girlfriends).”

I not very sure if I had mentioned the following thoughts, which I used to have, to her (I think I did mention but not in detail):

More than 5 years ago, “girlfriend” is a word that seems unreachable. It a word that “wa… so good…” if one can hold it (her) in his hand. It is a word that I will think about every night “when will I get one?”

Looking at a girl, thoughts like – “will she accept me if I confess?”, or when a girl smiles – “is she interested in me?” will surface to my mind.

Looking at friends around me “why and how did they get a girlfriend?” I don’t remember who but I believed I did ask some of my friends questions like “how to do talk to a girl” or “what do you all talk about?”

I’m quite sure these are some of the thoughts that guys without girlfriend will be thinking of. But I must say this kind of thinking is WRONG!

Ya, I know. I used to think that way too. I did stupid stuff before too, said stupid things before too, and thought of stupid ideas before too. That is why I do not wish to see others following my footsteps.

Important, girls are NOT objects, they have feelings too. They are not toys which 3 years old kid (we guys) would say “I want!”

Shame on us… wanting a girl just because we think she is “chio”. But,
1) how well do we know her?
2) what is her personality?
3) how does she deal with problems?

Note: these are the 3 main questions that guys don’t give a damn when they are attracted to a girl.

After spending tons of effort, money, creative ideas to woo her. Finally win her “heart” and have a girlfriend. Finally have a sweet honeymoon period. But what comes after that?

Miscommunication, misunderstanding, fails to communication, fails to understand each other, unable to solve the problems. Start to tell yourself “we are not meant for each other”, “I don’t like her actually”, “why can’t we be together?”, “what happen between us?”

I tell you what happen… the root of the problem lays in the 3 questions I mentioned above. Guys often fail to understand the girl before telling himself “I like her”. While the girl, blinded by the fanciful stuff that a guy would do for her, thinking that this will last forever, fall for that guy.

Shit…. I’m writing halfway and started to forget the main idea for this blog…

Okay, to put it simple. Girlfriend is NOT an object that you want it, you try to get one. She is not for you to show off to others but to show your true self to her. Being Mr. Nice guy cannot last forever, honeymoon will run out of “money” (also refers to creative ideas, patients and interest)

If you are thinking of a girl or even girls right now, ask yourself this…
Is she a wants or needs?

WRONG! THIS IS TOTAL WRONG!

Once again, girls are NOT objects. But also don’t start saying philosophy things like “oh… let the nature take its course” or “see fate, when it is time it will come”

You do have to put in effort to win a girl, but only when you know and have the right mind set.

What is the right mind set? Well, I have told you what the wrong mind sets are.

#036 Boring yet necessary process

Ever had the feeling that there is something that needed to be done, yet you just don't have the motivation to do so? Even if you know that it is beneficial to yourself?

It is commonly due to the process, the boring process.... Its either time-consuming or tiring. Simple example, exercising. Despite everyone knows that exercising is beneficial to our health, some people (including myself) just dont have the motivation to exercise.

I just went downstairs to do some running, my IPPT is on 11June. I know i need to train-up and be prepared for it, also running is a healthy habit. However, while i was running, just the within the 12 min of my life, i think otherwise.

I was cursing and swearing inside my heart thinking:
Why the hell do i need to go through this?
I should just give up, the worst case is to fail and go for PT, no big deal...
How can i down pes to pesE so i can just ROD and save all this trouble?
Will they suddenly abolish the policy of IPPT?
etc...

Now this questions may seems childish or stupid, but this questions just repeating bursting out of my mind while i was running. And their motives are the same - tell me to stop running.

To some other people, running may be the most enjoyable thing in their lives. They just enjoy running, i'm not sure if they are pushing themselves to do it on regular basis or they truly love running. I could not understand that feeling.

Similarly, I enjoy doing maths, the sense of accomplishment of finding the answer after constantly trying and thinking of new approach of solving the question. And also to learn about how incredible mathematics are, how every different theories or concepts fall perfectly together in place. Now i'm just finished year 1 maths, there is still a long way any many more things to learn...

Think i off track too much... what i was trying to say is that there are many process in life that are boring yet necessary. For instance, working - its boring to a lot of people yet its the most honest, morally upright way of earning money.

And what differs successful and less-successful people?
Putting luck aside, hardwork and self-motivation is the key.

No talent? its okay, you are losing others by just 1%.

No luck? it will come to you some day. I strongly believe that what goes up must come down and whats at the bottom will eventually come up. You will never run out of luck, just dont give up.

No motivation? Bye bye...

Its all in the mind, external factor can only influence but the decision is still yours. I have a chinese saying: 如果马儿不想喝水,你把它带到河边也没用。如果马儿想喝水,它自己会跑到河边的。

Hence, dealing with these boring yet necessary process. You have to motive yourself to get it done with. While I was running, i constantly "rebut my thoughts", if i fail this time, i have to do this stupid thing all over again, why torture myself twice? I can do it in the past, so can i do it again.

The moral of the story: Never give up.

Although i know the next time i run, the whole process will repeat itself again, but no choice, its part of our lives...

Welcome back to my Singlish teaching lesson. Before the I start the lesson proper, I would like to clarify something to prevent potiential future confusion.

Singlish is NOT broken english; broken english is a common mistake that we Singaporeans make, mostly for those who were chinese-oriented. In their mind, they tend to form their sentences in Chinese and then translate to english before they speak, thus the sentence structure of their english are incorrect or broken. Though it may be broken, foreigners are still able to guess and understand what it means.

But for Singlish, it is a language which Singaporeans speaks chinese, but combines it with english, and even dialects (for basic level we mainly talks about english only). Unlike broken english, we dont need to go through the sentence in our mind once and translate it, Singlish comes naturally. We can instinctively form a sentence in Singlish with much thinking (actually we dont think when we are speaking Singlish).

In summary - broken english is Chinese --translate to--> English, and Singlish is (Chinese + English + Dialects) fused together. Singlish is an art and i doubt foreigners will ever master it.

Okay back to lesson, today we will be giving a brief idea of when will the chinese words be in english. Its very difficult to be specific on when to use what, so i came out with a simple technique to roughly know which words to use.

When there is a choice of words with the same meaning, choose the one with lesser syllables. The following is some or the more commonly used Singlish in our daily life:

华语 -------------------- 新语
因为 -------------------- Cos
所以 -------------------- So
But
Still
Then
如果 -------------------- If
是不是 ------------------ Is it
Hor
So far

Now i will form the chinese sentence followed by the Singlish sentence for comparison.

新语 - 你把手机留在toilet, is it?

新语 - So far, he still没有reply我。

Hope that until now you are able to follow.

Just 2 things to point out, you may notice that in the last Singlish sentence, the "他" became "he". This is a type of special cases, I call this 'Language Automatic Translate To English' - LATTE, where a single chinese word in between a few english words, in this case we will say "he" instead of "他". Again, i will talk more about LATTE in the future.

Another point is about "hor", beside the meaning of "对不对", it is used when you want to stress and emphasise a your point or when there is a short break between your sentences. Most of the time it is used behind the Singlish words mentioned above. Note: don't use two "hor" in a sentence. This is also another special case called 'Second Hor Is Terrible' - SHIT.

I think that is all for now, i will teach more on the choices of words next time. Just a recap, today you learned a basic technique for choice of words when forming sentences, and two special cases - LATTE and SHIT. I hope that you enjoyed this lesson and wont find it too dry.

*Lastly, always keep in mind that this is just a mocking blog on Singlish. Please don't really go and learn all this SHIT and LATTE thingy. Speaking proper English or Chinese is always the best way of communication.*

*Today while I'm on my way to school, I suddenly recalled several interesting words that we use when we were in primary and secondary school. So I have decided to write it down, thought my title is 教学 which mean teaching, i don't encourage anyone to learn or even practices it. These are just for laughter. *

For those who don't understand what i meant by 新语, its a short-form for 新加坡语 or more commonly known as Singlish. One more thing, if anyone spotted that i made any mistakes, please let me know.

Singlish is a unique language in Singapore, should we be proud of it? For now keep that answer to yourself, at the end of this blog, ask this same question to yourself again.

First and foremost, I shall write a sentence that I really did say it when I was on the phone with my friends. I didn't realise how bad it was myself until my girlfriend started laughing. I shall skip the rest of the conversation.

"If 我今晚 can make it for 宵夜, then 我再 let you know."

I believe most of you understand what I'm trying to say, right? This is the standard of Singlish that we should learn in this blog.

Always remember that Singlish often can be said in 2 ways - English or Chinese. But some can only be said in English or Chinese.

In school, we often need to name several stationery during our conversation in class. So we shall start by learning the correct saying of some stationery in Singlish. For objects that can be said in both languages, i will leave them out.
In the list below, I will state both its English and Chinese name plus how we say it in Singlish.

Now lets try to put them into sentence,

Or 你有paperclip?

  • 我用rubber rub 了,but rub 不干净。

For the verbs it is more difficult to master when to use English and when to use Chinese, so we cover it in the future blog.

Are you able to follow so far? As a Singaporean I believe it isn't hard at all, if hard just put water to make it soft...

Now coming back to think of it, Singlish often brings laughter into our lives such as follow:

  • Can lend me your tissue? (Can, but please don't bother to return me after using.)

That's all for now, if the respond is good or I have any new ideas i will continue the next

#030 Movies of lives

Few days back, channel 5 was showing the movie Mr. Bean's Holiday. If I'm not wrong, this is the second "Mr. Bean" movie. I watched it about 3-4 years ago when I'm still in JC, together with Jia Yu and Kenneth Goh.

The movie finishes with a happy ending that Bean (Rowan Atkinson)finally reaches the beach that he long wanted to go, the lost kid (Max Baldry) finally reunion with his parents, and the lady (Emma De Caunes) became famous from the movie which was edited by Bean.

It is often that whenever a movie or a series show finally come to an end, especially happy ending, I will have a weird mixture of feelings. Similar to why I wrote #018 完美结局, endings of Mr. Bean's Holiday inspired me to write this post.

The ending gave me a feeling of accomplishment, that finally he reaches the beach.
Also some sort of envy, that despite his unique behaviour and characteristic, the misunderstanding (kidnapping the kid) was finally resolved and he made several new friends in France.
Happiness too, to see everything finally went well and everyone had their wishes came true.
But mainly is the feeling of sadness, ending of the movie implies that soon i will have to leave the movie theater, face the reality and carry on with life.

I'm not saying that i have a miserable life, but life isn't like in some of the movies (assume the movie is 90min), you know when the climax is approaching (about 60+min) and knowing that it will be a happy ending eventually (at the end of 90min).
Of course, here I'm talking about typical cartoon movies and lighthearted comedy movies. Not Inception that kind.

Life is a continuous, unpredictable and ever-changing movie. Why ever-changing? Your very existence affects other movies (other people's life) and so do other movies around you changes your point of view in life.

Though our movies are not as short as 90min, nor they have no endings. We never know when will our movies end, and how well will our sequels (next generations) will continue. We never know when and how many climax are there in our movies, and how they will turn out.

With so much uncertainty in life, what can we achieve in our movies of lives?
I don't know.

But what i know is, we must make our one and only movie the best, and show other movies that how we made our movie worth existing. Hoping to inspired the sequels to be more exciting and meaningful.

Should I rate my current own movie, i would say 8.5/10. A movie worth watching.
How about you?

#014 What is life?

i wasn't really a fan of english poems, but somehow i just like this poem that i learn during my secondary days, think its one of the poems we are forced to learn during literature class.
i wont say much about what the poem is trying to say, as i dont think i have the capability and right to comment. i just copy the whole poem and hope whoever that reads it feel somewhat inspired about his or her life.

Leisure by W. H. Davies

WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?—

No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows:

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

#010 Apple

What inspired me to write this blog about apple is that one day I suddenly recalled that my JC GP teacher once used apple as an analogy to discuss about finding the truth in science.

Not exactly word for word of what she had said, but the idea of what she said:
In the world of science, what is the truth?

Imagine the truth is an apple, if scientist A discovers that apple is “round”, scientist B discovers that apple is “sweet”, scientist C discovers that apple is “red”. Are any of their discoveries wrong? Not quite, then who has successfully discover what apple is? None, yet all of them are right, what they had discovered is just part of what apple is.

But what happen if another scientist D discovers that apple is “green”? If he is not wrong, doesn’t this contradicts with what scientist C had discovered? Yet both of them are not wrong, because there are apples that are red and apples that are green.

This leads me to start thinking – Then for years and centuries of perusing and studying science, will we ever find the “real” or “entire” truth? How do we know that what is the “absolute” truth that we are seeking? If we don’t know what are we trying to achieve, then how we are going to achieve it?
Is there something that completely explains what is apple?

What are we studying? We are merely learning that apple is "round", "sweet", "red", and sometime "green" too. Then what are we trying to learn and discover in lives?

When I was thinking about this using the apple analogy, I realised something – the word Apple is such an amazing word, with many profound meanings behind it.

Apple, unknowing is one of the first fruit we learn, or even the first word we learn when we are talking about English. Why?

Apple starts with letter A – the first letter in the 26 alphabets. When we are teaching children about alphabets, words and fruits. Apple is generally treated as red (there are green apples too), a bright and striking colour to attract children’s attentions, hence a great example and tool to start the ball rolling of teaching children English.

In some myths that tell story of the beginning of human beings, apple is regarded as the forbidden fruit, or fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The very fruit that changes (or should I say determined) how human’s life will be.

In the history of evolution of human beings, apple is known for inspiring someone to ask question about the nature of the world, and eventually discovered gravity.

In the modern world, some electronic product company, uses “apple” as the name for its brand, and its merchandises continues spreading worldwide. Replacing music players, replacing cell phones, replacing portable entertainments gadgets, and even competing with the world most commonly used computer OS (operating system), Windows.

Throughout the history of human existence, apple is seen everywhere. Is it coincident that all this happen by chance? Or did we deliberately use the word “apple” to make up myth, to inspire us, to earn money?
We don’t know, just the “apple” truth, we will never know…

#003 It's your choice

There are alot of choices to make in life. But i must say there are no good or bad choices, right or wrong choices, there is also no such thing as "no choice". Let me explain my point of view.

They are just choices, they dont hold any significances. It is the 1)person who make the choices, 2) the process of the choices which you made, and 3) the outcomes or consequences of the choices you made have. These 3 factors are the ones that come out with the conclusion/ judgement of saying its a good or bad choice.

I seem like saying some nonsenses or u may think "duh?". But i really wanna say is people tends to accept what is beneficial and what is to their advantage. When something bad or undesired outcome occurs, they will target the "choices" they made and claim that they are BAD choices. The choices are innocents! They are just there for us to choose, it is us who to take it.

So we must keep reminding ourselves that choices are for us to make, so when we have some outcomes that we dislike, we must tell ourselves that we make the choice, we should be responsible for our decision. Have no regrets for we have choose.

Think i'm going too off-track... Anyway, about the bubble tea from the previous post. My guess is its a intended pun, to have both a chinese word and an english word. I think more singaporean call it KOI cos they are more sensitive to english word then chinese. As for me... i saw "豆" first. haha. So whether you wanna call it KOI or 豆 its all up to you. Its your choice. :)

#002 "KOI" or "豆"?

Since my blog name is milkteaisthebest, i shall start my blog talking about milktea.

Currently, (or it has been quite awhile) these milktea stores have been doing quite well, no matter where they set their outlet, there is always long queue of ppl willing to spend 10min (+5min) to buy a cup of milktea with dozens of small tapioca balls.

What puzzles me is
1) the name of the shop "KOI"? Or "豆"?
2)What is so special about this milktea that is cost about 60% more expensive than stores like "sweet talk", "each-a-cup", but yet the queue is about 600% longer than latter stores.

I went to tried the mliktea too, at least 3 times.
I have to acknowledge tat it is indeed nicer than some other bubbletea, in terms of the milk in the tea and the minipearls. I love to drink milktea alot, much more than any of my friends tat i know of. I have to say tat in term of the milktea, it is one of the best milktea i had drank so far. (Suddenly remember tat Hong Kong Cafe's milktea also one of the best.)

However, i do look at the price of the milktea too, and in my personal opinion, its still doesnt worth $2.40 for a cup and the long waiting time. If u ask me, I wont stop ppl from buying it, nor will i recommand ppl to buy it. But of coz sometime, maybe i will buy another cup again too...
