也许英文比较容易说-it can be seen as half-empty or half-filled.

#017 My Life, My Game

I like playing games, not those bonding, ice-breaking, that kind, but those that can seat down with a couple of close friends, spend a couple of hours playing together. Before i start buying games, i only have chinese chess with me, which seldom have people playing with me and it is limited to 2 players. Hence i started buying games.

i also cant recall when was it, but one day i just decided to buy a game, can be card or board game from settler's cafe, a board game cafe near my house. i think the first game i bought was Citadels (not Citadel, its an entire different game). Really quite enjoy it, playing with friends of course. Not long later i bought Munchkin (version 1), and also i enjoyed playing with my friends. But there is once at we played the game at one of my friend's house, i think we spent about 3 hours playing it, that stupid friendship potion, but still i really enjoyed it.

After sometime, i went to buy Saboteur. It is then i realised it is quite fun to play games that involved cheating and bluffing. But at the same time i notice that its isn't cheap to buy this games. Although it is cheaper than going those board game cafes, but a simple card game is like 30+, for those with tokens or figurines or models will be 50+. And i cant buy those big board games, not convenient to bring around and definitely not cheap.

One day, just a random day going out with friends, i saw a new card game 三国杀, as a fan of Three Kingdoms, i surely won't miss this chance to buy that game. The drawings are amazing, when one likes something, everything about it will be will catch the lover's attention, chinese call it 爱屋及乌. I guess i that is what happened to me.

Soon, i start thinking, why will i keep spending money to buy games? Of course, I'm not saying those games i bought don't worth the money. I must say I'm impressed by the people who thought of the games. And if part of the money i spend on their games goes to them, i think they deserve it.

Anyway, so i started thinking that why not I try to make some games too? Games are created by human, so can i create something. Hence i start my "project", the first one that i started was rather too complex and difficult to accomplish, so it was put aside.

During the time around my birthday, one of my oldest friend bought me the game 风声, the second chinese based card game, after 三国杀. Playing consecutively 3 bluffing and cheating games (Saboteur, 三国杀, 风声), i began to feel tired, not that I'm bored of those games. But tired of cheating and bluffing every time.

During one fine day, an idea on creating stuck me. So i decided to focus on trying to make that game. After several days of drawing, scanning into computer, colouring and print it out. I finally made the game, it may not be as nice as those games that are sold outside, but i must say i did my best to make it. I'm quite glad that the result is so nice that some of my friends doubt that it was drawn and made by me.

After trying out the game once, they kindly start giving me feedback, though i may be disheartened by some of the things they say, but generally they meant well. And i really appreciate their feedback.

Back home, i started thinking, so should i modify the game? Or just let it be? Now I'm having my 1st sem break, surely i want to make full use of the time, so making the game will take up quite alot of my holiday and it may just turn out that no one will want to play it.

After discussing with my love, i decided to just go on modifying the game. Who knows, maybe one day i can sell it for profit. Even if i cant sell it, no one plays it, and the game was throw in one corner. I know that someday, when i take it out and look at it. I will know deep inside myself that if i want to do something, i can make it happen. Even if none of my friends appreciates it, i am proud of my own work and i will strife to do better.

Of course, that is the last resort. I do hope that people, or at least my friends will like this game - Fish.

#016 Final Fantasy VII - Enemy Skill Materia

Finally i got some time to talk about Enemy Skill Materia. In FF7, Enemy Skill is considered as one of the most useful materia, because it a few of its skills are rather quite useful, like White Wind, Big Guard, etc. They are essentially important for tough battles.

However, the guide didn't really emphasis on much on enemy skills, it just vaguely mention or didn't even talk about if for most of the time. So i just want write it in my blog so if there is every a chance I'm going to replay FF7 again, i know where to find the information about it.

First and foremost, where to find 3 out of 4 of the materia as soon as possible.

1) When first time entering Shinra Building, meeting Red XIII and after the fight with the Boss Ho512, the weird looking alien monster that uses poison. After the match, there is a enemy skill materia inside the specimen tank.

2) At Junon, when there is a chance, during Clould wearing back the Shinra Unit uniform, go to the shop that is in the foreground of the area, the row of shops at the "AP" lane. On the two long road, one is "DC", the other is "AP". Enter the shop, beside the stair there is a SOLDIER guarding the door, talk to him and go down, you will find the second materia.

3) At City of the Ancient, after the sleeping forest, go right lane, the house behind the first house. Then go all the way up the spiral, upon reaching the beds it will first prompt you if you wants to sleep, rest will continue on with the storyline, or maybe you want to rest later, behind the beds there is the third materia.

Now we talk about when, where and how to get the skill. I manage to find a list which i wrote long time ago, which i didn't even recall writing it, about where to learn the enemy skills, so i will just "copy and paste" it to this blog.

  • Matra Magic - anytime, outside Midgar, learn from Custom Sweeper, wait for it to cast the skill on you.

  • L4 Suicide - anytime, outside chocobo ranch, learn from Mu, wait for it to cast the skill on you.

  • Chocobuckle - anytime after learning L4 Suicide, Mideel Area (chocobo tracks), learn from L36 chocobo, feed it with green (Mimmett green or other greens also can, I'm not sure) then use L4 Suicide on it.

  • Flame Thrower - anytime after getting manipulate materia from Cait Sith, Mythril Mine, Arkdragon, manipulate it to cast on yourself.

  • Laser - first time in desert prison or anytime after disc3, in desert prison is the Death Claw, manipulate it. Or in Northern Crater, manipulate the Dark Dragon.

  • Big Guard - anytime, Corel area shoreline or Gold Saucer area shoreline, Beach Plug, manipulate it.

  • Aqualung - when fighting with Jenova LIFE (2nd time fighting Jenova), wait for it to cast.

  • White Wind - anytime, Junon area, Zemzelett, manipulate it.

  • Beta - anytime (strongly advise not before getting Highwind), Grassland area Marsh, Midgar Zolom, it will cast when it is injured bad enough.

  • Frog Song - anytime, Gongaga area Forest, Touch Me, it will cast on you.

  • Death Sentence - anytime, Corel Valley, Bound Fat, manipulate it.

  • ???? - either anytime at Nibelheim Shinra Mansion from Jersy, but chance of encounter is low. Or when return to Midgar - before reaching the railway tracks, Behemoth, wait for it to cast.

  • Trine - my advise it from Yuffie's Father Godo, after getting all 3 materia, then go Wutai to challenge the Pagoda tower. Or near the end of Gaea's Cliff, Stilvas, wait for it to cast.

  • Death Force - anytime, Wutai area Shoreline, Adamantaimai, manipulate it.

  • Magic Hammer - anytime, Wutai area, Razor Weed, manipulate it.

  • Bad Breath - disc3 Northern Crater Right path, Marlboro, wait for it to cast, advise, equip ribbon and have that character use White Wind after that Bad Breath.

  • Magic Breath - disc3 Northern Crater, Parasite, manipulate it.

  • Goblin Punch - anytime, Goblin Island, Goblin, manipulate it.

  • Shadow Flare - Ultima Weapon, it will cast on you.

  • Dragon Force - disc3 Northern Crater, Dark Dragon, manipulate it.

  • L5 Death - disc3 Northern Crater, Parasite, manipulate it.

  • Roulette - disc3 Northern Crater after learning Death Force, Death Dealer, cast Death Force on your team before manipulate it and use, best it use Death Force on Death Dealer too.

  • Angel Whisper - disc3 Northern Crater, Pollensalta, manipulate it.

  • Pandora's Box - ONE CHANCE ONLY, Northern Crater right path, FIRST time encounter Dragon Zombie, it will cast before dying. So the trick is prepare the materia, then when encounter it for the first time, kill it as fast as possible before it runs out of magic to cast you Pandora's Box. Use ether on it if necessary, it needs 110 MP to cast it, so remember to sense it to keep track of its HP and MP.

Well, that's about it. Hope nobody end up like me playing the game for the first time, unable to master 3 enemy skill materia.

#015 End of 1st sem

Phew... finally all the exams are over, not quite used to uni exam. i did what i could, wrote what i can during the 2 hours. Now just wait patiently for the results in Jan 2011.

Seriously its a hug leap from JC maths and uni maths. Either is because i overestimated myself or 2 years of army cause me out of the "mathematics" league, or both. In the past the exam questions are like - do this this this, show blah blah blah, find, determine... they are sort of "direct" question, you need to identify which topic is it related to what you had study, and the method you had learn and apply. What was hard are some questions that have small traps or require small trick to solve it.

But how? Prove blah blah blah, prove BY DEFINITION, prove the statement is true or otherwise show a counter example... It had changed from "how fast and accurate can you calculate" to "how well you know your maths and how to you write and prove your point". Which i'm still not used to it. hopefully i can get hold of it soon, real soon.

Well, 1st sem ended, barely know any friends, not really a good sign. Hope next sem will be better, but please dont come so soon. Let me enjoy more. :)

#014 What is life?

i wasn't really a fan of english poems, but somehow i just like this poem that i learn during my secondary days, think its one of the poems we are forced to learn during literature class.
i wont say much about what the poem is trying to say, as i dont think i have the capability and right to comment. i just copy the whole poem and hope whoever that reads it feel somewhat inspired about his or her life.

Leisure by W. H. Davies

WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?—

No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows:

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

#013 My Final Fantasy Histories

At first wanted to blog about FF7 - enemy skill materia. But having exam recently so don't have the time and mood to consolidate the information to write about it... Instead, i just name various Final Fantasy things that i tried and like...

First of course is Final Fantasy 7, i still remember the first time i tried playing, i borrowed the computer version of FF7 from my cousin to try, but upon meeting the first boss, the scorpion thing, i lost. Immediately, i gave up and returned the discs back to my cousin...

Until god knows when, one fateful day, i was so bored and asked my cousin if there is any game to introduce me to play. Then she offered my FF7 again, but at tat time i totally forgot that i had tried the game before. So unknowingly, i reinstalled the game to my computer (think its about after a year plus, as i had changed a new computer), and face the same boss again.

But this time i miraculously i won, actually that time i still didn't know that i should attack it when its tail is up (for those who played FF7 should know). So i actually just keep whacking with brute force plus spamming potion and finally win it.

Come to think of it, if i were to lose to it again, maybe until today i still don't give a damn about Final Fantasy. And so, my journey on playing Final Fantasy starts on that fateful day, which i forgot when was it.

Feeling so fascinated about the materia, magic, and strategies to fight, i began to get addicted to it. i managed to borrow the guide book from someone and zap the entire book to read, i cant wait to start breeding and riding chocobos, play the submarine mini game, see how does omnislash looks like etc. But a crisis soon falls on the beginning if disc 2.

For some unknown reason, whenever i try to get through the event at the Northern Crater, the part where alot of conversation, knowing that Cloud didn't actually went back to Nibelheim as a 1st Class SOLDIER, giving Sephiroth the Black Materia, wakening of the Weapons--- the very moment the scene that the Diamond Weapon crawling out from the ground, the game hangs!

Every time, without fails, the game hangs on that scene. As a result, i cant proceed on with the game! i cant do alot of things, Chocobo racing, getting Knights of the Round materia etc... No matter what i tried, leaving Northern Crater and come back again, go travel everywhere i could with the buggy and tiny bronco. And before i know, i was level 90+ and the clock in the game stuck at 99:99:99 (99 hours, 99 min, 99 secs).

But i was unwilling to give up just like tat, i tried asking around my friends to borrow a disc 2 to try, but what they have are the Play Station version disc, which i also tried, but cant. After a very long time, staring at the guide book imagining what it is like after i pass tat scene, i decided to try configure the graphics of the FF7, i also cant remember the detail how i tried, most likely anyhow try. And one day, i finally manage to pass through the scene.

I was so excited about it and so happy, i finally can continue the game for so long. All my characters are level 90+, except Red XIII, because when in the Northern Crater, i entrusted the Black Materia to him, so as a result i cant choose him to part of my party member during the time i stuck, most of the time i use Cid and Tifa.

Soon, i complete the game, beating Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon too. But i soon realised that i can never master all 3 enemy skill materia, and i forgot to collect the Ramuh Materia at the first chocobo race waiting lobby, thus i can never create Master Summon Materia.

So i replayed the whole game, this time, is then the first time i realised tat i should attack the first boss when its tail is up. By following carefully as the guide book suggested, reading information from websites, i complete the game again, with everything. The only disappointment of the game is tat in the game there is only 2 mystile armors. It was until many years later, when i have PSP, and got the FF7 game in PSP and replay the game, then i realised there is a way to get the 3rd mystile. That is why in the Final Fantasy Fan blog, the first thing i post about was the mystile armor.

But the PSP thing was many years later, when i complete the game for the second time, think i was in secondary 2 or 3. After that, i started playing FF8 on computer also, my 5th uncle bought me the computer version FF8. (Actually it was once i went out with my uncle then i saw FF8 so i bugged my uncle to buy me the game). And my second (third actually) round of Final Fantasy journey starts.

Soon before i notice, i completed the game again, beating Omega Weapon of coz. But i guess because i was yearning to continue the FF7 game for too long, so i like FF7 much more that FF8, also i not used to the GF stuffs. So i do like FF8 but not as much as FF7.

But i didn't continue FF9, because i don't have Play Station, and there wasn't computer version. So the Final Fantasy Fever cooled down for awhile, but not for long. Because Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children came out.

I think during that time (sec 4 i think), the graphics of the movie was best of the best. Oh, and in between FF7 and FF7AC, there was a movie Final Fantasy : the Spirit Within, it caught alot of people attention, but soon people realised that it doesn't really link much with any of the Final Fantasy series games.

During JC time, the official FF7AC DVD is coming to Singapore, i still remember i immediately went to MJ (Music Junction) store to pre-order the DVD, even though i had already watch it through some other means. I still remembered that the shipping was delayed, and i went everyday to the store to ask, even though they told me it will take a few days.

Not long after FF7AC, in 2007. Crisis Core : Final Fantasy 7 came out in PSP. But sad to say, i don't have PSP that time, and cant afford to buy. In addition, A level was coming soon so i didn't ask for it, and after A level will be National Service. So i didn't plan to buy, yet.

For some reason they soon came out with the entire Compilation of FF7 - From Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus. They really know how to make money. But sadly i don't have PSP or PS2, so i couldn't play Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core.

Not long later, Dissidia : Final Fantasy came out. After 3 years of waiting i finally get my first PSP (second handed), during 2nd year of NS. Again, very quickly, i completed most of Dissidia storyline and finish Crisis Core, and replay it, to collect most of the stuff. THEN, an other crisis falls... my PSP was stolen.

I don't wanna recall the details anymore, but my patapon 2, Dynasty Warrior : Strike Force and many more records, all gone... I only happen to backup my Crisis Core save games in my computer. Think after more than half a year, i then bought a new PSP again.

Then Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Complete appear out of nowhere, only on PS3, i was so tempted that i almost wanna buy a PS3 just to watch the same movie with some editing. In the end i didn't buy, and watched the movie through other means again.

Soon enough, Final Fantasy 13 english version came out. And truly thanks to many of my great friends, they bought me a PS3 with FF13 plus guide book as my birthday present. I'm truly touched and really enjoyed the game alot.

I didn't really thanks them personally so far, so i take this chance to thanks them. The following list is written by Andy, hope he didn't leave anyone out.

#010 Apple

What inspired me to write this blog about apple is that one day I suddenly recalled that my JC GP teacher once used apple as an analogy to discuss about finding the truth in science.

Not exactly word for word of what she had said, but the idea of what she said:
In the world of science, what is the truth?

Imagine the truth is an apple, if scientist A discovers that apple is “round”, scientist B discovers that apple is “sweet”, scientist C discovers that apple is “red”. Are any of their discoveries wrong? Not quite, then who has successfully discover what apple is? None, yet all of them are right, what they had discovered is just part of what apple is.

But what happen if another scientist D discovers that apple is “green”? If he is not wrong, doesn’t this contradicts with what scientist C had discovered? Yet both of them are not wrong, because there are apples that are red and apples that are green.

This leads me to start thinking – Then for years and centuries of perusing and studying science, will we ever find the “real” or “entire” truth? How do we know that what is the “absolute” truth that we are seeking? If we don’t know what are we trying to achieve, then how we are going to achieve it?
Is there something that completely explains what is apple?

What are we studying? We are merely learning that apple is "round", "sweet", "red", and sometime "green" too. Then what are we trying to learn and discover in lives?

When I was thinking about this using the apple analogy, I realised something – the word Apple is such an amazing word, with many profound meanings behind it.

Apple, unknowing is one of the first fruit we learn, or even the first word we learn when we are talking about English. Why?

Apple starts with letter A – the first letter in the 26 alphabets. When we are teaching children about alphabets, words and fruits. Apple is generally treated as red (there are green apples too), a bright and striking colour to attract children’s attentions, hence a great example and tool to start the ball rolling of teaching children English.

In some myths that tell story of the beginning of human beings, apple is regarded as the forbidden fruit, or fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The very fruit that changes (or should I say determined) how human’s life will be.

In the history of evolution of human beings, apple is known for inspiring someone to ask question about the nature of the world, and eventually discovered gravity.

In the modern world, some electronic product company, uses “apple” as the name for its brand, and its merchandises continues spreading worldwide. Replacing music players, replacing cell phones, replacing portable entertainments gadgets, and even competing with the world most commonly used computer OS (operating system), Windows.

Throughout the history of human existence, apple is seen everywhere. Is it coincident that all this happen by chance? Or did we deliberately use the word “apple” to make up myth, to inspire us, to earn money?
We don’t know, just the “apple” truth, we will never know…
